Raw Materials Summit 2024: Addressing the Energy Storage and Conversion Realities
Meeting the critical supply-demand gap entails not only increasing supply but also championing alternative energy sources and solutions to curtail storage needs and material demand. Yet, the green transition may be slower and may rely on a more diverse set of solutions than initially thought. Global oil and gas exploration spending will increase to over US$ 22 billion in the coming years – compared with a US$ 13 billion budget for aggregate non-ferrous exploration. Nuclear still accounts for the single largest energy source in the EU (600 out of 2,400 TWh). Are the current supply-demand gap analyses for energy-related materials realistic? What will the impact of rapidly emerging technologies be? How will this change the investors’ appetite for green energy, minerals and metals? The session advocates for a comprehensive approach, that fuses increased supply with pioneering technologies, like iron-air batteries batteries and game-changing alternative solar cells, and alternative energy sources, such as natural hydrogen and geothermal, ensuring an agile response to escalating demand while fortifying energy security. Can we quantify raw material volumes to make it tangible? Who can spearhead this, and what level of investment is needed? Participants will also gain exclusive insights into ERMA's ground-breaking second Action Plan on Energy Storage and Conversion, unravelling transformative shifts in the supply-demand equation.

Raw Materials Summit 2024: Greenland molybdenum mining project – Securing high-quality, long term molybdenum supply for the EU Green Deal from a Responsible Sourcing
Greenland Resources Inc. is a Canadian mining company that owns the Malmbjerg project, a world-class Climax-type molybdenum mineral deposit with copper near Tidewater in East-Central Greenland. ERMA supports the Malmbjerg project and has a recent NI 43-101 bankable feasibility study. Accordingly, it is a world-class molybdenum deposit with copper featuring a Climax-type ore of high MoS2 concentration and low levels of impurities. The Malmbjerg project has the potential to cover approximately 25% of Europe’s molybdenum needs, with the potential to start production before the end of the decade. This made it ad hoc an attractive project within the EU’s Critical Raw Materials Act as part of the EU-Greenland strategic partnership. The EU represents the second largest user of molybdenum worldwide, as the metal is vital for European metallurgical and chemical industries. Despite being nearly self-sufficient in processing capacity for molybdenum concentrate and having a very sophisticated metallurgical steel industry, Europe so far has no molybdenum mining activity and entirely relies on imports of concentrates from overseas. The prospect of having a molybdenum mining site on EU-associated territory, fully compliant with responsible sourcing demands, has received strong interest for long-term offtakes from major EU industries. The presentation will present a video of the project and will detail the features of the Malmbjerg deposit and outline the mining plan developed by Greenland Resources Inc. Particular attention will be attributed to highlighting the efforts done towards sustainable mining, allowing the lowest carbon footprint and environmental impact. The downstream processing scenario, all based in Europe, will be drafted to demonstrate strategically important independence from overseas supplies. Besides the technical aspects, progress in EU financing and offtakes will be discussed.
